When you visit Thailand, you may wonder why the rest of the world is not as accepting of the gay community as the Thai people are. During your gay vacations to Thailand, you will find that most people are Buddhist, and their sexuality comes without guilt. Many Thai people do not distinguish between gay and straight with a label, and whether you choose to love the same sex or the opposite sex is really no concern in Thailand.
Thai men want to meet western men, so they teach themselves a certain amount of English so that they are able to converse somewhat. And it may not end in the hotel room. There is a gay culture there, but it has been more or less created by the westerners. You will find lots of gay friends and gay night life here.
Because the Thai people are not infatuated with youth, there is a lively gay community over the age of 35. This is a delight to gay westerners that are middle aged and even older. The local gay bars, as well as other establishments, can be found by simply asking some of the locals about them.
Gay establishments, such as go-go clubs and saunas, were largely commercial until just recently. Now there are non-commercial establishments, such as coffee houses and the discos, in the big cities of Thailand. And you will want to enjoy a night at a local go-go boy bar.
Although the gay community is obvious, kissing and hugging in public is looked down upon. A public show of affection in any way is inappropriate to the Thai people, and it is the same for gays as it is for straight people. If you do see two Thai men arm in arm, they are just friends and are not displaying any other type of affection.
And the Thai people are very modest. They will dress behind a towel or other cover, even in a gym locker room. The bedroom may display the same modesty, at least until things get going. And if you are expecting wild and crazy sex, you may be in for a disappointment. It is probably a good idea to discuss any special interests you may have.
There are many drag queen shows, starring ladyboys, as the Thai people call them. The bars that have these shows playing mainly cater to a straight crowd. And there are bars where you can meet boys for the night, as well. This is a relatively safe practice, as the bars are aware of whom they hire.
Other cultural differences you should know about are important. For example, you will be expected to pay for everything on the date, as you are actually considered the social superior, although things could change in the bedroom. Compliments are good and should be made often. Try your best not to criticize, as even constructive criticism is not taken well. Dress well and neatly to win more respect, as it is appreciated. The sniffing of your cheeks is a sign of affection, so be ready for that. And be generous. You may even be expected to share your clothes and your toothbrush. All in all, you should have a wonderful time during your gay tours to Thailand.
