Healthy Choices For A Healthy Life

Posted by: Kevin Kean, D.C.   in Health and Well Being

According to Dorlands Medical Dictionary, health is a state of optimum physical, mental, and social well being, and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity. What does that even mean? Well, the basic concept is that even when we feel good, it doesnt necessarily mean that we are healthy. Conversely, when we feel bad or sick, it doesnt necessarily mean that we are unhealthy either.

There are actually four aspects to achieving optimum health. These four topics are: a properly functioning nervous system, exercise, proper diet, and increased sleep and decreased stress. Of course, a properly functioning nervous system is what allows everything else function properly, but today, we are going to talk more about other aspects of your life that you can improve in order to achieve optimum health.

The second topic, exercise, is important for every man, woman, and child to have as a part of their lifestyle. Whether you are 1 or 120, it is never too early or too late to get up and move. The American Heart Association recommends 30 minutes of continuous exercise five times a week in order to improve and sustain cardiovascular health. One of the leading causes of death in the United States is heart disease. If we each took the initiative to at least take a 30 minute walk five days a week, we would be doing ourselves a lot of good. The most important thing is to get up and MOVE!

The third topic is a proper diet. Food is the fuel for our bodies. We require it in order to function. Most of the time, unfortunately, we view food as a pleasure item as opposed to a requirement. Just like a car that takes in poor fuel and eventually breaks down over time, if we continuously feed our bodies poor fuel, it will break down as well. We should strive to make the right choices at the grocery store and not even allow the poor choices to enter our home. This way, we can avoid the temptation at home.

If its not there, then you cant eat it. We should try and buy natural, organic, and local products. This includes produce and animal products. Chicken should be free range and beef should be grass fed. Try to avoid High Fructose Corn Syrup and Partially Hydrogenated Oils (Trans Fats). Try to minimize the amount of saturated fat you take in to less than 5 grams a day. All of these tasks do take effort and a little more time at the grocery store reading labels. A little extra time at the store can lead to a longer and healthier life.

Finally, decreased stress and increases sleep. If we can make sure that the first three are a part of our lives, we can help reduce the amount of physical and emotional stress in our lives greatly. Also, with less stress, it allows us to sleep better. Sleep is very important. During sleep, we regenerate cells and heal ourselves, so the right amount is imperative. We should be getting at least 6-8 hours of sleep a night. If we can consistently get this much sleep, our health can show great improvement.

Make the right choices on a daily basis and you will be doing yourself as well as your loved ones a huge favor. If you are looking to live a life of optimum health, call me, Dr. Kevin Kean, at Core Chiropractic and get your spinal function checked today!

Bodybuilding: Muscle Gain and Body Fat

Posted by: Ricardo d Argence   in Health and Well Being

If you’re anything at all like most bodybuilders, your ultimate desire is a simple one: To have an impressive, muscular physique with razor-sharp definition and the envy of everyone around you. You want to be huge, and you want to be shredded.

This desire for the perfect body makes many people dive headlong into an exercise regimen. Everyone wants to bulk up, and bulk up fast, but at the same time they’re also worried about gaining the extra bulk of body fat.

If you want to add a significant amount of muscle to your frame over as short a period of time as you can, you will always end up gaining some extra body fat along with it.

Unfortunately, that is just the way the body works, and if you want to get bigger, you’re going to have to accept the fact that body fat will come along with the muscle gain.

The reason for this is because in order to gain muscle mass, you have to consume a surplus of calories to support the necessary protein synthesis. The difficulty is that there’s no way to ensure that 100% of all these extra calories go towards muscle growth. Some of it will inevitably end up as stored body fat.

As all bodybuilders know, in order to make dramatically change your appearance in the quickest amount of time, the most effective way to do so is to focus on gaining size. For a set period of time, gaining size will be your goal. Only then can your priority shift to focus on losing body fat.

Based on what we’ve covered so far, the goal of a bulking phase is simple: build as much muscle size as possible while minimizing body fat gains. Your goal during a bulking phase is never to LOSE body fat; it’s only to gain as little as possible.

This can be accomplished in 3 main ways:

1) Use your caloric surplus wisely. A caloric surplus is when you gain more calories than you burn. This is required for muscle growth, but simply gorging on food without a plan or exercise will simply earn you more body fat.

The generally accepted caloric surplus for supporting muscle growth is 15-20% more calories than is needed to maintain your weight. If you are consuming a caloric amount within this range, there is no need to go any higher.

2) Make good food choices. Most of your food intake should be in the form of high quality lean proteins, healthy/unsaturated fats and natural, high fiber carbohydrates.

Don’t just eat anything and everything; make sure you’re concentrating on proteins, especially lean proteins, and keep an eye on your blood sugar. Also, avoid all those saturated fats.

3) Implement cardio sessions. There’s no need to go overboard here, but implementing 2-3 cardio sessions throughout the week is another way to cut down on fat gains during a bulking cycle.

Keep these sessions no more than 10-20 minutes long, sticking to high intensity/low duration forms, as these kinds of session have the advantage of not causing the same amount of muscle loss as longer duration forms.

Once you’re at a size you’re happy with and the muscle gain you want, you can focus your attention on losing that body fat. However, you want to keep working to avoid losing the muscle you’ve just gained. And remember that while bulking up, you’re going to gain body fat. There’s simply no way around it.

However, just keep in mind that while bulking up, gaining some body fat is inevitable and the trick is simply to minimize it rather than totally avoid it.

You would never want to miss the chance to look great in seconds, would you? Don’t you fret. The solution is a leader in hair accessory trends: hair extensions.

Realistically speaking, no “one” hair extension exists. The accessory can in fact be categorized according to the origin of the hair used, the color, the texture and the method by which you attach the hair extension. This article looks into the methods of attaching hair extensions to your own hair.

The fundamental methods used in putting in hair extensions include clip-ins or clip-ons, braiding, bonding, weaving, fusion, pre-tipped (U or I shaped), and ring X.

Hair extensions that have microclips at one end allow you to clip on the accessory to your hair. Clipping the accessories can be a do-it-yourself activity. You don’t really need to hire somebody from the salon.

With braiding, you simply braid a few strands of the extension together with your own locks so that both extension and natural hair are entwined together and securely latched on to each other. There are plenty of braiding techniques available. Which style you’d like to have done depends mainly on the braiding skills of the hairdresser.

Bonding is a procedure where bonding glue is applied on one end of the hair extension, thereafter it is ?bonded? on your hair root. This process is so quick and uncomplicated that it is just like putting on a false eyelash. Hair extensions attached using this method can be easily removed using a glue remover especially designed for glued hair extensions.

Weaving, which is the most popular form of attaching hair extensions, is when tracks or cornrows of your natural hair are made close to the scalp then the hair extensions are sewn or weaved into these tracks. Some experts assert that if you have badly damaged hair, this might be the best method of putting on a hair extension because your real hair will be enclosed in the hair extensions.

Fusion, also known as the hot glue gun method involves exactly that. The hair extensions are fastened to your hair using a hot glue gun. The hot glue is applied to the hair extensions then attached to your hair. This process is quite costly and labor-intensive because the whole process can reach up to 6 hours.

A few hair extensions are pre-tipped with some glue. You will require a special applicator though to fasten the pre-tipped hair extensions to your hair.

If you’re looking for a contemporary technique, there’s ring X. Here, the extensions already have cute metallic rings fastened to one end. You then use a special tool so that the metallic rings can be attached to your own hair.

One important thing to remember here is that, except for the clip-on method of attachment, you should have a professional hairdresser perform the ‘attaching’ for you so that you won’t end up doing the wrong thing and having a big mop of damaged hair and hair extensions.
