Insomnia is a sleeping disorder which results in people having difficulty falling asleep and staying asleep, and it is a disorder which affects millions of people. Of course as is to be expected, there are an abundance of medications available for treating this disorder. However, an increasing number of people are now looking for natural treatments rather than having to rely on prescription medication or over-the-counter medication. Interestingly enough, it has long since been established that insomnia can be classified into a one of two categories, namely primary insomnia and secondary insomnia. The purpose of this article is to shed some light on the various treatments available and also on the condition itself.
In order to determine an appropriate natural based treatment for the sleep disorder which affects falling asleep and/or staying asleep, it is essential to determine which type of insomnia is present in that individual. The type that is categorized as “Primary” means that the person is healthy and only suffers from the sleep complication itself. Those that suffer from the type designated as “Secondary” suffer from insomnia that is considered to be a symptom or result from an existing health complication or condition. In some, the sleep issue may stem from ingesting certain substances such as medication, and even alcohol based products.
As far as determining a suitable natural treatment is concerned, one also needs to take into consideration the length of time a person suffers from the disorder. For example, if insomnia is preventing you from getting a proper night’s rest once or twice each week, then it would be safe to assume that you are suffering from acute insomnia. If on the other hand this condition is preventing you from getting adequate sleep three or more times each week, then by all accounts you are suffering from chronic insomnia.
Essentially, there are numerous factors which can contribute to the onset of insomnia. For example, those who suffer from acute insomnia may often experience difficulty sleeping due to stress, medication, or any other form of discomfort. Those who suffer from chronic insomnia on the other hand, often suffer from this disorder due to excessively high levels of stress or one or more medical conditions. Even depression can play a significant role in whether or not a person is able to get to an adequate amount of rest. Of course, if insomnia is caused by depression, anxiety, or stress, then it only stands to reason that reducing stress levels is perhaps one of the best natural treatments.
Even though many people only think of insomnia as a sleeping disorder, it does involve certain other traits as well. For example, because sufferers find it extremely difficult to get an adequate amount of rest at night, they often feel sleepy during the day and as a result, they may find it almost impossible to concentrate sufficiently on matters at hand. Likewise, because of the lack of sleep, sufferers may also find that their memories are affected as well. Furthermore, if left unchecked, sufferers may also experience complications with regards to their moods, in which case it is not uncommon for them to become irritable and depressed.
Interestingly enough, it is widely accepted that the human body simply cannot continue to function for more than three weeks if deprived of sleep. Additionally, sleep not only ensures that you have sufficient energy to go about your daily life, but it also helps to boost your immune system. Furthermore, it is during the times when you are a sleep that your body repairs its muscles and tissues. The bottom line is; sleep is vital for both mind and body and as such, if you suffer from insomnia it would be in your own best interest to invest a little bit of time in order to research the different natural treatments.
Melatonin is without a doubt one of the most effective natural treatments available for insomnia and even though the human body produces this substance naturally each day as soon as night time arrives, unfortunately the body often fails to produce enough in order to insure a good night’s sleep. Fortunately though, there are now natural melatonin products available on the market which can assist in providing an adequate amount of rest. One can also make use of another product known as valerian in order to promote better sleep. Both of these products have the ability to ensure that one can get a proper night’s rest which of course is vital to having sufficient energy during the day, just as it’s vital to ensure that one’s moods remain stable.
As you may already know, the market is full of natural products and remedies which are said to be effective in treating insomnia. However, the vast majority of medical providers still continue to speak highly of both melatonin and valerian for the treatment of insomnia. For those who experience difficulty with falling asleep, or those who continuously wake up at all hours of the night, valerian or melatonin may well prove to be the end of your suffering.
