A made to measure (bespoke) suit is one which is made for you from scratch by the master tailor. His skills have been learned through years and years of work in the shop. Sometimes father and son tailors exist in one family. He (or sometimes these days, she) will take your measurements you and make a fantastic suit that fits to perfection.
Many great tailors are also very easy to find. Most tailors post advertisements in local phone books. With a large selection, you can choose a tailor based on value, location, and speed or finish quality.
The best advice always comes from word of mouth. Be sure to ask friends, family and coworkers if they know of an outstanding tailor in your area. You may even be able to see examples of their work. Exceptional tailors will have built a strong reputation in the community, so you may already have an idea of who to go to.
Obviously it will cost considerably more to have a suit personally made to measure than to buy one mass produced from the rails. It is money well spent though, because the quality, comfort, look and longevity of a made to measure men’s suit is far better in every way.
The process of designing a suit starts with an initial fitting at a tailor’s shop. The tailor will take many measurements, while you decide the preferred color, fabric, and other necessities. Then, the tailor will collaborate with you on various styles, personal styles, and when you will be wearing the suit.
You will return later and the tailor will produce a strange looking cloth shaped like a suit. This will be stitched loosely together. Don’t worry, it’s not completed yet.
Depending on the complexity of the design and the accuracy of original measurements, there may be several fittings for you to attend. Each step is necessary, to insure a perfect fit.
As soon as the fit is correct, the tailor will create the actual suit. This step may take a considerable amount of time, depending on the pattern of the suit and the workload that the tailor has. It may be hard to wait to see the finished product, but the wait should be well worth it, given the level of artistry involved in creating a made to measure, custom suit.
