Fear of Flying Explained

Posted by: Sandy Davenport   in Health and Well Being

by Sandy Davenport

In the year 2000, over 1 Billion people flew on commercial airplanes. Over 18 Million flights resulted in only 20 fatal accidents. In the same year, there were over 41,000 traffic accidents. Clearly, it is logical to say that travel by plane is much safer than by car.

Nevertheless, rational human beings who have no problem racing all over town in their car every day break into a cold sweat and experience other physical and mental symptoms any time they are faced with the thought of flying on a plane.

Probably the most important thing to keep in mind is that, while it may seem that the risk of flying is the cause of the fear, that is probably not the case at all. As with all phobias, the underlying cause is anxiety, which can be triggered by many different factors.

There is very little that an airline passenger can control in his surroundings. The climate cannot be adjusted if it is too hot or too cold. If the surroundings are cramped, it is difficult to make space and you can’t open a window to get fresh air. When turbulence rocks the plane, we have no brake or other controls to manage the situation. We can’t even see and probably don’t know the pilot. Contrast this to an automobile, which we either control by driving ourselves, or know and trust the driver personally.

With minimal control over the situation, things that would otherwise be just annoying take on gargantuan proportions on a plane. A delay on the runway results in our minds racing with all the horrible possibilities why the plane hasn’t taken off yet. The snug surroundings become more and more constricting until it feels like the plane has closed in on us. And our anxious minds turn a little turbulence into an out of control tailspin crash.

While many are able to identify and conquer these anxieties before their conscious mind even experiences them, there are many more who encounter some form of panic when flying, which may vary in degree from tolerable, to uncomfortable, right up the scale to full out panic attack.

The good news is that there are ways to conquer your fears without drugs or expensive therapy. As with all anxieties, the first step is to understand the cause of the fear, and then it can be faced.

Liposuction for Men is Growing in Popularity

Posted by: Leonard Dawson   in Health and Well Being

by Leonard Dawson

Liposuction is one of the most common cosmetic surgical procedures available. Used mainly by women for a long period of time, the number of males having the procedure is growing rapidly. Liposuction can be a very effective way of removing fatty deposits from troublesome areas.

While it is important to note that liposuction is not a cure for obesity or to be used in place of diet and exercise, it provides many benefits. Whether you are a man who has a natural build-up of fatty tissues in certain areas of the body despite toning or have lost weight and now experience disproportionate amounts of body fat, liposuction can be helpful.

General anaesthesia is commonly used during the liposuction procedure, though in some cases it may be performed using a mild sedation and local anaesthesia. Liposuction in males is performed using a procedure called tumescent liposuction, which uses a solution of epinephrine and anaesthetic to aid in the removal of vast amounts of fatty tissue. The tissue is removed using very fine tubes called cannulas that are inserted into small cuts in the skin and attached to suction pumps.

Many areas of the body are commonly operated on during male liposuction treatment, depending on the placement of fatty deposits. Commonly operated on areas include the face and neck, thighs, hips, calves, ankles, knees, arms, breasts, abdomen, and back. Before operating, your surgeon will conduct a thorough physical examination including blood work to ensure that you are a good candidate for the procedure.

After the procedure is completed, you will be required to wear a girdle for up to two weeks and will have to undergo courses of massage and ultrasound treatments. These procedures will help to reduce recovery time. Patients can return to work after only a few days, but must wait two weeks before beginning even a limited exercise regimen.

Side effects of liposuction include swelling, bruising, numbness and pain. Swelling may take up to three months to improve, and the full results may take up to a year to be visible. Doctors typically prescribe moderate to strong painkillers to alleviate postoperative pain. Complications of male liposuction are rare but can include blood clots, infections, and allergic reactions. Telling your doctor of any medications or supplements you take prior to surgery can help reduce this risk. As with all surgical procedures, it is imperative that you choose a licensed cosmetic surgeon with experience with the procedure to reduce risks of side effects and complications.
