Possibly there is a cause or it may be just for expediency. Even so nearly all supermarkets will do anything they can to facilitate you the buyer procure as much as possible.

Fundamentally, the perishable things, which also tend to be the healthiest things, are around the perimeter of the store. Produce, Dairy, and the butcher blocks are all around the edges. The healthiest foods, meaning whole, less processed, and often even less high-priced foods are around the perimeter. Most stores will also position up sales at the edges of the aisles so as you are walking around you will see the bargains.

In the center of the store are the less nourishing and more processed foods. There is where you will discover the canned goods, the food in boxes and all of the less nutritious things like potato chips, cookies, candies and soda pop.

On over but still in the middle are the paper products, the cleaning products and the beauty items. Towards the front and side here is where you will regularly find the pharmacy and the in store bank if they have one.

At some supermarkets you will locate the cold things in the middle but occasionally you will find them on the side. Sometimes there will be the cold section in the middle and the frozen section on the sides next to the dairy.

The best plan is to shop the perimeters for all the perishables first and then move on to the interior of the store. That way you will be sure that you are loading up on the healthiest items first. If you are trying to get the maximum nutritional worth for your grocery resources try to stay away from the middle of the store as much as possible. Panties Full of Posies

Posted by: Kate Kew   in Humour

by Kate Kew

As a novice gardener, years ago I remember standing by a particularly sparse bed of vegetation and screaming, “Grow! You stupid flowers! Bloom!”, and almost crying in frustration at not getting the results that I wanted after many weeks of earthy labor. Flowers, it seems, will ignore these types of pleas if you ignore their need to be placed in an area that corresponds to their nature. As gardeners, we need to accept this ground rule. Embracing this law signals your advancement to the rank of actual “gardener”, because until you have passed this marker you will just be a wild, out-of-control killer; another muderer in Eden. After years, I finally passed this embarrassing milestone, and yet I still find myself trying to bend this rule. Now though, I have discovered something new; adult diapers and the universe of container gardening.

Not too long ago, my spouse spent a Sunday afternoon installing window boxes on the front of our house. I quickly filled these well-drained boxes with perfect soil and a beautiful assortment of blossoming flowers. It took me about 3 days to realize that I was engaged in conflict with the relentless afternoon sun. No mortal could posible keep up with the watering that these wndow boxes demanded. They were high and dry and even though the flowers were clearly designated for direct sunlight, I was never going to have more than dry thatch outside my windows unless I came up with a way to manage the humidity of the soil in these boxes.

Sometimes gardeners and writers have to start over and that’s what I did. I overturned the boxes and started fresh. This time, I unfolded some adult diapers and spread them all over the inside of the window boxes with their absorbent sides facing into the boxes. I re-filled the boxes with new soil and flowers, hung them back up and gave them a good watering.

Adult diapers are a modern miracle. They aren’t just overstuffed with shreds of paper towels; they are strategically filled with crystals of a special polymer called SAP which can absorb up to thirty times its own weight in fluid. I can report that these little crystals did their job perfectly. Rainwater was absorbed by the diapers and then gradually released back into the soil, keeping the soil at consistent, ideal moisture levels. Oh yeah, I should also mention, this polymer is non-toxic.

Of course, the genius of this effort should not be over- played. It certainly wouldnt raise an eyebrow at the garden club. Using diapers in the service of a garden will come as a natural for most gardeners: we’re all about manure, aren’t we?

Enjoy!
